Lewis Coaches was founded on the 7th March 1978 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk by Tony and Janet Lewis with one coach, a Bedford Duple Bella Vega purchased from Diamond Coaches then of Bury St Edmunds.
In 1982 Lewis Coaches fleet had increased to six coaches and moved out of Bury St Edmunds to the Rougham Industrial Estate just outside the town. They stayed there for 20 years.
In 1987 their youngest son Jamie joined the family business as a driver and mechanic. Whilst at Rougham the fleet increased to twelve coaches and the coach depot was no longer large enough to house the business.
With no suitable premises available in or around Bury, Lewis Coaches took a tough decision and moved to Brandon, Suffolk, 12 miles from Bury St Edmunds to larger premises on the Brandon Business Park, London Road. Lewis Coaches stayed at these premises until March 2009, again increasing the fleet to just over 20 coaches. This meant the premises were once again not suitable for the large operation that was then taking place each day.
As luck would have it less than 600 metres away BRS Roadways old haulage depot was coming up for sale. Those premises housed a fleet of over 50 trucks and trailers for many years. Lewis Coaches moved in after some considerable refurbishment work to the large workshop and parking area in June 2009.
The new premises if required in the future could house and maintain a fleet in excess of 40 coaches. In addition to coach hire and travel, Lewis Coaches carry out 4 weekly inspections on their fleet – far exceeding the required standards of legislation. They also retain a professional and competent group of mechanics; as such Lewis Coaches are pleased to be able to offer various services to the coaching industry including servicing, MOT preparation as well as repairs to all makes of coaches at very competitive rates.
In 1995 the family owned and run business was joined by eldest son Andrew, allowing the founders, Tony and Janet to take a less active roll in the day to day running of the business. Andrew came to the business after successfully running two of his own businesses for in excess of 15 years.
Today their fleet of over 20 coaches boast seating capacities of 16, 24, 35, 49, 53, 55 & 57 including full executive luxury models. Their current contracts include Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils, Bury Town F.C, R.A.F. personnel contracts, factory contracts, theatre trips & private hire services. Although now over 30 years old it is of paramount importance to Lewis Coaches that being a family run business, in what is a very competitive industry, they retain the same family values as in their founding year and ensure that they not only meet, but exceed their customers expectations. It is they believe due to this standard that they set themselves that they remain trading and are proudly able to say that they have developed a customer base today of well over four hundred satisfied clients.
As some may know they used to offer holiday packages some years ago, which to say the least were very popular. Due to repeated requests they have decided that from 2011 Lewis Coaches is going to re-launch it’s U.K. Holiday programme for 5, 7 & 9 day breaks in Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Cumbria, Scotland and Southern Ireland as well as over the water in Belgium and Germany.
